On what would have been R&B star Aaliyah’s birthday, Mattel decided to pay tribute to the late singer with a special collector Barbie doll of Aaliyah. Preorders for the dolls went on sale on Jan. 26, and immediately sold out.

To create the doll, the Barbie team worked with Aaliyah’s brother, Rashad Haughton on the doll’s outfit which is a matching leather set inspired by the “One in a Million” music video. The doll also can be seen wearing detached sleeves and the singer's signature statement shades.

“I can vividly remember my sister playing with her favorite Barbie dolls for hours when we were kids. She would make them sing, dance and perform little concerts,” said Haughton.

The doll was released as a part of the Barbie Music Collector Series, which has included collectible dolls of Stevie Nicks, Gloria Estefan, David Bowie and Tina Turner among others.

Aaliyah rose to fame in the 90's with her 1994 debut single, “Back and Forth.”

Since her rise, four of her albums have gone platinum, with three happening posthumously.

Aaliyah died at age 22 on August 25, 2001, when her chartered plane crashed in the Bahamas, shortly after wrapping her music video for “Rock the Boat”.

“My sister would be ecstatic to see her legacy celebrated this way, empowering fans to dream big and believe they can be anything that their hearts desire,” contined Haughton.
