Major social media outlets went black this morning and it seemed a lot like 1999 before social media was a necessity. Billions of users on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger and Oculus started receiving error messages around 11:40 am est.

Within minutes, Facebook had vanished from the internet. The platform used to communicate with family and friends, reach the masses through advertising and marketing and for some to simply pass the time was gone with no explanation. Moreover the outage created a domino effect since people use Facebook to log into other apps, smart tvs, and even thermostats.
By late Monday, Facebook had been restored. It appears the reason behind the outage were changes behind the internet's infrastructure that coordinates the traffic between the data centers. Essentially that interrupted communications and cascaded to other data centers, bringing our services to a halt, says the social media giant.
Once more of their apps appeared accessible again, Facebook officially tweeted, "We're sorry."
It really does go to show, maybe we depend on technology a little too much and it's not always dependable. 🤷🏽♀️
