"CandyMan" Director Makes Box Office History

Nia Dacosta, the director behind the remake of the horror film, has made history. Universal Pictures announced that she became the first black female director to see her film debut in the top spot at the domestic box office.

CandyMan, a remake of the 1992 horror cult classic- made 22 million in its premiere weekend.
Nia's accomplishment also marks the 2nd highest grossing three day domestic box office opening for a Black female director. Ava Duvernay holds the top spot for her 2018 film A Wrinkle In Time.
Under Dacosta's and co writer/producer Jordan Peele's direction, the new Candyman takes another look at the story of Candyman (A Black man who was tortured and killing for falling in love with a White woman.

Candyman is now playing in theaters.
