NBA Legends Chris Webber and Grant Hill are now officially minority owners for a WNBA team.
Per AFROTECH™, Hill and Webber joined a bid in January 2025 to secure a stake in bringing a WNBA team to Detroit.
Both Webber and Hill once played in the city for the NBA. The group’s bids which also includes football quarterback Jared Goff were approved.
The team is set to launch and begin competing by 2029. Little Caesars Arena is expected to be its home base and a new practice facility is in development, according to CBS News.
"This is a huge win for Detroit and the WNBA," said Tom Gores, owner of the Detroit Pistons, who led the WNBA bid and will be the controlling owner of the new franchise.
Detroit was first awarded a WNBA franchise in 1996. The Detroit Shock played in Auburn Hills from 1998 to 2009 before the team moved to Tulsa and then to Dallas.
