Rapper J-Kwon ‘s two Grammy nominations for songwriting credits on Shaboozey's smash hit “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” have been removed by the Recording Academy. The country song credited the rapper, as well as two other writers Joe Kent and Mark Williams, as apart of the writing process for the song.
According to an updated post on the Recording Academy's website Kent, Williams, and J-Kwon whose real name is Jerrell C. Jones will only be eligible for a certificate if Shaboozey’s song wins at the awards ceremony on February 1, 2025. This is according to the Academy’s rules regarding sampled or interpolated material. Billboard said the change was made last Thursday, December 12.
Grammy rules state that “songs that contain samples or interpolations are eligible” for song of the year. But they also make a distinction between songwriters of the new song (who are eligible for Grammys) and “publisher & songwriter(s) of sampled or interpolated material, if applicable),” who are eligible only for certificates.
"Tipsy" peaked at No. 2 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in April 2004 and now continues to lives on through "A Bar Song (Tipsy)," which stayed at No. 1 for over four months. Shaboozey, whose real name is Collins Obinna Chibueze landed his first of five Grammy nominations, including Best Country Song, Best Country Solo Performance and Song of the Year.
