First Lady Shaunie Henderson is giving back to the community. The mother and philanthropist hosted a community baby shower called Mother’s to Bee in Houston on Saturday, May 9. Henderson gave people.com an exclusive interview on the event.
According to people.com, Henderson aimed to show expectant and new moms they aren’t alone on their journey. She says her only goal with the event was to make it the "ultimate baby shower" for single moms while offering them fun and support.
"With the village or not, you can get overwhelmed because it's mental [and] it's emotional. It's all the things at once that no one can really explain to you until it actually happens," Henderson tells PEOPLE of motherhood. "We just want to make sure that these ladies have the community, have the support, have the love, [and] have as many essentials as we can provide them, so that we could just make this journey a little bit easier for them."
Henderson and her team selected 100 moms-to-be and new moms with babies under 6 months old for the event. The ladies played baby shower games, won prizes, and took home a few goodies for their little ones, all while building a community among each other, according to people.com.
"There's so many moms in need," she continues. "There's so many moms that are alone and by themselves, and this is our way of being intentional about them.”
