Rapper turned reality star Trick Daddy has stirred up social media after questioning why Black people in the United States are referred to as “African American.”
“I’m trying to figure out how ‘Afro’ get in front of my motherf—king race,” the Love and Hip Hop: Miami star said in a recent video that was shared. I ain’t never been to Afro-ca. I have never been to Africa. Afro or Africa. Never been there. I’m not from Africa.”
The Florida rapper reminded viewers that he was born in Goulds, Florida before moving and being raised in the “Pork-N-Beans” projects in Liberty City, Miami, Florida.
“[I] ain’t never went to Africa, ain’t thinking about going there,” he continued. “And I heard it’s a beautiful place, yes. And I know it’s the motherland, yes. But not my mother, not her mother, and not her mother’s mother, that ain’t their land. Americans’ real true land is right here, on U.S. soils.”
Trick Daddy’s statement was seen with a mixture of emotions and opinions online.
Some users expressed the same viewpoint as the rapper, with one commenter suggesting that “although Black people from the U.S. and Caribbean are aware of how we got there, that journey created new tribes with different cultures and attributes.”
While others disagreed with his statement. “As an African, feel free to drop the ‘African’ so you can claim ‘American’ and see how well that goes for you,” one critic responded.
Another commented, “People just be getting on the internet embarrassing themselves. Kids, stay in school and educate yourself.”
