Two-time defending champions, Las Vegas Aces are being investigated after every player on the team received a $100,000 sponsorship deal. On Friday, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority announced it would sponsor every player on a two-year $100,000 annual sponsorship to each Aces player for this season and 2025. The organization posted a video on social media to announce the new deal which has raised flags with the WNBA.
A league spokesperson confirmed to ESPN on Saturday that there is an open investigation looking into the deal with the Aces players. Alleged extra benefits were part of a league investigation of the Aces last season, as this is their second year being investigated.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal says the contracts require the players to partake in promotional “appearances on Las Vegas’ behalf” and to wear Las Vegas-centric gear. After a win over the Los Angeles Sparks, coach Becky Hammon said the organization has nothing to do with the sponsorships because the LVCVA negotiated directly with player representatives for the deals.
