2021 MTV Video Music Awards Recap

Updated: Jan 16, 2022

The VMAs happened last night and they were packed with performances, a new moonperson trophy and Madonna even dropped by. Doja Cat served as host for their 40th anniversary celebration and made history. She is the first video of the year nominee to host the awards in the same year. While she didn't take home the video of the year award, she went home with 4 others.

First of all, Madonna wanted the world to know she's still got it. She wore a pretty incredible leather ensemble while delivering an opening monologue and introducing Justin Bieber.

Justin opened up the show performing with Kid Laroi. This marked his first VMA performance in 6 years. Later on that night he won big as Artist of the Year.

Other performances included host Doja Cat, Camila Cabello, Kacey Musgraves, Twenty One Pilots, Olivia Rodrigo and Normani. Chloe Bailey had her debut solo performance with her sister Halle Bailey looking proudly in the audience. Lil Nas X took home the top moonperson of the night for Video of the Year and performed with Jack Harlow. The Foo Fighters also hit the stage and were presented with the Global Icon Award.

Presenters included Nick Lachey, Halle Bailey, Simone Biles, Megan Fox, Ashanti, Travis Barker and Jennifer Lopez among others.

The latest moonperson was designed by Kehinde Wiley. He was the first African American to paint a portrait of a U.S. President (former president Barack Obama.)

MTV released this statement to Rolling Stone: The design features botanical vines seamlessly flowing up and around the figure's legs, body and arms as commentary on the ethnic histories that surround America. Each intertwined vine or leaf has a different historical relevance, such as the seeds from African slaves, that are woven into American tapestry.
