Updated: Jan 14, 2022

HBO made the announcement that the very creative and innovative series that is LoveCraft Country will not be returning for season 2.

The series starring Jurnee Smollett and Jonathan Majors is a blend of sci-fi, horror and history. The ratings continually rose through word of mouth and made history for HBO. The season finale was the most watched new episode of an original series on HBO Max in its first day of availability. By the time the season ended, the pilot episode had reached over 10 million viewers.

Unfortunately as it's the case for many other shows, the ratings and audience reception did not guarantee the show an automatic renewal.

Season 1 is based off of Matt Ruff's book and earlier this year HBO said executive producer Misha Green and team were working on where the characters journeys would go without a blueprint. Ultimately, HBO decided to not move forward.

After the announcement, Misha Green took to Twitter with her reaction. She gave us a glimpse of what her season 2 would have been.

The 10-episode first season of Lovecraft Country followed Atticus Freeman (Majors) as he journeys with his childhood friend Letitia (Smollett) and his uncle George (Courtney B. Vance) on a road trip from Chicago across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father Montrose (Michael Kenneth Williams). Their search-and-rescue turns into a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and monstrous creatures.
