Primetime Emmys 2021: The Winners, The Losers And The History Made..

Updated: Jan 16, 2022

Cedric the Entertainer hosted tv's highest honor, the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards. He opened up the show by giving tribute to television itself and rap icon Biz Markie who passed away in July. Actors and actresses in the crowd chimed in to the tune of Biz's hit song, Just A Friend.

History was made in several ways, some good and some bad. Ted Lasso set a new record by becoming the most nominated freshman comedy series in the awards' history with a whopping 20 nominations. It surpassed Glee who held the record with 19.

The Queen's Gambit became the first streaming series to with the category of Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.

The Crown won all 7 drama categories, the first to do a clean sweep of the major drama categories.

The Handmaid's Tale had an astonishing 21 nominations, but what's even more surprising is the show didn't win any. That's a new record for the largest exclusion. That record was previously held by Mad Men when they didn't win any of their 17 nominations in 2012. Elisabeth Moss and crew weren't the only ones that went home empty handed... heavily nominated WandaVision, Lovecraft Country, and The Mandalorian never got to give those acceptance speeches either.

While this year's nominees were the most diversified to date, when it came down to wins white performers won all of the major acting awards. This led to the hashtag #emmyssowhite trending on Twitter.

RuPaul did make Emmy history for the most wins by a person of color as RuPaul's Drag Race secured its fourth consecutive Emmy trophy for Outstanding Competition Program.

Hamilton made a splash by winning in the variety special category (pre-recorded).

Debbie Allen was honored with the Governors Award.
