SZA on Having Breast Implants Removed: Not Worth The Risk

Grammy award winning singer SZA is opening up about having breast implants removed due to high risk health issues. #healthfirst

The 34-year-old singer, known for hits like "Snooze," made a recent appearance on the S.H.E. MD podcast. This podcast is hosted by Mary Alice Haney, a former fashion designer turned entrepreneur, and Dr. Thais Aliabadi, a board-certified OB/GYN renowned for her work with celebrities such as Rihanna and Khloe Kardashian.
"With my risk of breast cancer and then with the actual, I have markers in my breast, metal markers in my breast for the fibrosis for these lumps or whatever, I'm not supposed to be getting breast implants," SZA admitted, saying she did so anyway. #breastcancerawareness
“When I got my boobs done, my doctor took out some of my fibrosis, but.. there was so much fibrosis, it was crazy,’ she confessed. “And he took it out. And so, when I went back, a lot of the concerns were gone.”
In an exclusive look on an upcoming episode with People, SZA said her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and her aunt also had a mastectomy. She recalled learning that she has a 53% lifetime risk of developing the disease because of her family history.
The Grammy winner admitted she hadn't fully grasped the risk initially, so she wasn't really concerned. However, her perspective changed when she attempted to undergo breast implant surgery and discovered fibrosis, the thickening and scarring of connective tissue in her breasts.
She added, "I didn't feel good and it was painful, so I took them out."
It is incredibly empowering to use your platform to spread awareness as a public figure. With the level of influence that comes from the consumption of internet, media, and the industry all together, transparency is appreciated. Let's hope that this message goes forth to other young women who may feel the pressures to have plastic surgery. Health first, always!
