People who owe $2,500 or more in past-due child support might have to rethink their travel plans. The U.S. State Department announced last week that it will begin revoking passports from people who owe significant amounts in child support.

The State Department will be working with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to do the revoking process. Officials say the Department of Health and Human Services will update the State Department on all-past due amounts and people who face revocation.

“Under the Trump Administration, the Department of State is coordinating with the Department of Health and Human Services on an unprecedented scale to revoke the passports of Americans who have racked up significant outstanding child support debt,” the State Department said. “This action supports the welfare of American children by exacting real consequences for child support delinquency under existing federal law.”

The State Department advises people with child support debt to arrange payment to prevent losing their passports. Eligibility for a passport can only be restored after the debt is paid, and there are no delinquencies, officials said.
