After a year of calling for Target to be boycotted, and creating the Target Fast Intiative, Pastor Jamal Bryant says it is coming to an end. New Birth Missionary Baptist Church Pastor Jamal Bryant shared the update in a Washington D.C. news conference alongside others who also led efforts to boycott the store around the country.
"We are effectively today closing this chapter because we have other fights that we have got to see and other things that we've got to tackle," Bryant said Wednesday.
During the press conference he highlighted what the fast did, and spoke on the things he would like to see the retail giant achieve. The fast was created after Target announced in Jan. 2025 that it would roll back its DEI efforts. Pastor Bryant was one of the most vocal critics of those cutbacks, while emphasizing the need for the fast.
Activist Tamika Mallory also spoke at the press conference calling for the company's new CEO to publicly acknowledge the harm that was caused in the community. Another activist, Nina Turner also spoke on why she was present at the conference. Turner said she showed up, "to give an update because the people who joined in and spent their dollars elsewhere deserved to know what progress had been made and where they stood."
